I Went to SpiceWorld and I Never Wanted to Leave

Seeing as I’m only now waking up from a pretty long internet hiatus, I haven’t had the chance to share with most of you something pretty earth shattering that happened this summer :

I saw the Spice Girls. In London. Up close and PERSONAL.

Ever since I saw the movie when I was six – faux double decker bus of dreams flying across Tower Bridge, it’s been a dream of mine to see my personal heroes in the big smoke. Truly, I thought it would never happen. And then they got social media. And then there was talk of a tour.. perhaps. And then all hell broke loose once they released the dates and I booked flights and accommodation the second I secured tickets.

21 years later, it happened! And it was EVERY bit as magical, girl power filled, and rhinestone adorned as I could have ever dreamed it would be.

Here’s the deal : when we arrived in London, I had tickets for the first of their three shows at Wembley stadium and loved it so much I had to go back on the final night in the pit – second row! I regret nothing. For night one I wore my favorite sequinUnion Jack dress despite it being a cool 60 degrees (Farenheit, people – this is an American’s blog, after all) and raining. Mom and I got on the train to the show, and I relished in being on an Overground full of people decked out in all things pink, leopard, and glitter – wigs, go-go boots, and pigtails galore. Truly should have taken some artsy 35mm shots of it all – it’s a moment in time I never want to forget and full of so many of my favorite things.

London’s meant so much to me over the years – but my love for it was very much sparked by five girls in platform shoes. So, to be able to see them after having my own story in the city play out – favorite haunts, people, memories in tow – THAT was the magic of girl power at its finest.

Writing a 5,000 word essay on why they matter now more than ever – owning their own frivolity, womanhood, motherhood – doesn’t feel like a very ‘me’ thing for the blog, so I’ll save that for my personal journal. Instead, enjoy these snaps:

PS : For what it’s worth – the creative direction and concept for the show was seriously a next level love letter for what Girl Power means in 2019. Huge, huge kudos to Studio Moross for giving me, and so many other fans, the experience of a lifetime and breathing fresh air into a noble message. Xoxo.
